HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL 62nd Session
Interactive Dialogue on the Situation of Human Rights in Sudan
15th June 2026
Mr President, Excellencies, Commissioners – we have heard the calls for justice and accountability, and we have listened to those calls.
Last Tuesday, Legal Action Worldwide and our partners, filed the first war crimes complaint with the Director of Public Prosecutions in Nairobi, Kenya. The criminal complaint identifies 10 persons of interest from the Rapid Support Forces – who are mid- senior level commanders who travel freely in and out of Kenya.
We represent twelve brave Sudanese women and men who filed this complaint – they were arbitrarily detained, tortured, raped, sexually enslaved, and witnessed family members being killed in and around Khartoum – they are representative of millions of Sudanese who have suffered from horrific crimes.
The survivors are asking for something simple but fundamental: that their evidence is examined by a competent legal authority. When the Kenyan Prosecutors office officially received the 196 pages complaint and stamped it – it is already a first step towards accountability.
It is now for Kenya’s prosecutorial authorities to independently assess the evidence and determine the next steps – we have trust and confidence that they will order an investigation.
Esteemed Commissioners – how can member states best support justice and accountability efforts to ensure that Sudanese war criminals have no safe haven?
Thank you.
