Statement by Antonia Mulvey: Mesret Hailu’s Fight for Justice

Accountability & Rule of Law - Lebanon - Advocacy - Strategic Litigation

Today is a landmark moment. Not just for Lebanon, but for every nation that upholds the Kafala system. Moments ago, our client, Mesret Hailu, confronted her former employer and testified in court about the eight years she was enslaved in Lebanon. It was a moment of extraordinary courage and deep emotion, a moment that will echo far beyond these walls.

Nearly five years ago, MH filed the first-ever criminal case in Lebanon accusing her employer of slavery, slave trading, and gender and racial discrimination under the Kafala system. Since then, she has endured endless delays, intimidation, and systemic attempts to bury her case. But today, she spoke not only for herself, but for the thousands of migrant domestic workers who never got the chance to be heard.

No one should have to relive the trauma she endured. But MH chose to, because she believes in justice. Her voice carried pain, but also fierce determination. Her testimony was more than evidence: it was a demand for recognition, and a call to change a system that has exploited hundreds of thousands.

Behind every statistic, like the 250,000 migrant domestic workers in Lebanon, is a human being with a story that matters.

Now, the path forward lies with the investigative judge, who must complete the file and refer the case to the Public Prosecutor. MH is demanding full prosecution and a public trial for those responsible.

Today was a crucial step toward justice. We fought to make this day happen and we will not rest until MH’s call for accountability is answered.

I am available to answer your questions. However, due to the ongoing criminal investigation, we are unable to comment on the specific details of MH’s testimony or the facts of the case.
