Human Rights Day: The time for justice is now

Today, on Human Rights Day, I reflect on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and am reminded that justice and accountability are not ideals; they are urgent, non-negotiable rights for every survivor of human rights violations. These are not abstract concepts, but essential principles that demand our unwavering commitment.
Today, my heart is with the people of Syria, who have endured years of brutal war under an oppressive regime. While Syria’s future is unclear, it will be shaped by its own people. We hope for a future defined by transitional justice, a dignified return for refugees, and accountability for all parties. My thoughts are with survivors of Assad’s crimes as they begin their path forward.
I remain deeply committed to a survivor-centered approach, ensuring that the voices of those most affected, especially women and children who have endured sexual violence, are heard and respected. Legal action is both a shield for the vulnerable and a sword demanding justice for the perpetrators.
We must end impunity. The suffering of survivors can no longer be ignored. Their fight for justice is my fight. The time for justice is now. Let us stand firm in the pursuit of dignity, justice and rights for all.
