Is There Still a Possibility for the ICC to Investigate Syria?

Side Event to the Human Rights Council 57th Session

Thursday, 03 October 2024

14:00 – 15:00

This side event aims to explore the potential for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate the situation in Syria, specifically through a state referral based on enforced deportation. This discussion is crucial in light of the numerous obstacles that previous efforts faced, including vetoes at the Security Council and other significant challenges. The event will feature a panel of distinguished speakers who will provide insights into past efforts, recent attempts, and future possibilities for ICC involvement in addressing the grave human rights violations in Syria.

Panelists:

  • Mazen Darwish, Lawyer, Founder, and Executive Director of Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression (SCM)
  • Michelle Jarvis, Deputy Head of the International, Impartial, Independent Mechanism (IIIM), Syria
  • Antonia Mulvey, Founder and Executive Director of Legal Action Worldwide (LAW)
  • Yaser Tabbara, Lawyer, Co-founding Board Member of Syria Forum (SF); Chief Strategist
