Join our campaign to end domestic violence and child abuse in Sri Lanka –Prayaama, a concert to raise awareness

Prayaama, a charity concert organized by LAW Sri Lanka took place on the 22nd of March at the Nelum Pokuna Indoor Theatre; Sri Lanka’s most prestigious and largest state- of- the- art theatre. Prayaama, which means ‘effort’ in Sinhala, was organized as the third phase of LAW’s ongoing social campaign to end domestic violence and child abuse.

Over 1,000 spectators gathered, and Sri Lanka’s most prominent artists took the stage, delivering astonishing performances. As popular figures, they encouraged behavioral change to prevent domestic violence. Thought-provoking videos showcasing the gravity of the issue and reflecting public perceptions of domestic violence were also displayed, to address social stigma and stereotypes related to domestic violence.

Victim-survivors from shelter homes across Colombo also joined the concert. They enjoyed the moment and felt a mix of emotions, as the evening provided them with a rare opportunity to engage in an atmosphere of joy, unity, and empowerment. It also was an opportunity for them to reintegrate into society, and it fostered hope, confidence, and a sense of belonging. They said the concert was the highlight of their year.

Members of the diplomatic community attended the concert, showing solidarity with the cause. The Ambassador of Germany, Dr. Friedrich Neumann, Head of Cooperation of the Canadian High Commission of Sri Lanka, Linda Ehrichs, Senior Representative of Sri Lanka Office for Japanese International Cooperation Agency, Ide Yuri were among the distinguished invitees. The Attorneys of LAW’s Gender Justice Legal Network, founders of the shelter homes, LAW’s partners and consultants in Sri Lanka and well-wishers from civil society and the legal fraternity including the former Attorney General of Sri Lanka, President’s Counsel Dappula De Livera were present at the concert to show their support.

An art exhibition featuring paintings by Human Rights Lawyer Marini De Livera was also held at the venue. These paintings depicted her experiences in representing victim-survivors of domestic violence and child abuse within the justice system of Sri Lanka. These paintings were her coping mechanism to deal with the shortcomings of the system and the re-victimization faced by her clients.
